Sports Massage: The Foundations & Treating Common Sports Injuries

This course is designed for licensed massage therapists seeking a foundational knowledge in sports massage, accessible for sports newcomers and useful for experienced sports therapists as well. Therapists receive 6 NCBTMB-approved continuing education hours for licensure renewal.

COURSE OVERVIEW:

Participants will receive information pertaining to:

  • A proper definition of sports massage

  • Customizing treatment plans around an athlete's training schedule

  • Understanding pre-event and post-event phases

  • Stages of soft-tissue injury recovery and the work appropriate for each

  • The most commonly used and misused modalities in sports

  • Common sports injuries and how to treat them

  • The nature of working in sports and how to get a foot in the door

WHAT TO BRING:

Note-taking materials, a towel for draping, emollient, any tools you use often (cups, scrapers, etc).

Wear athletic attire—especially shorts that can be draped. We will not use sheets, we will be doing sports drapes with towels.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

Blake Mundell is a sports LMT with 12 years of experience in the NFL. As a member of the medical staff with the Tennessee Titans, he developed his expertise working alongside other healthcare professionals to address sports injuries in every stage of soft-tissue recovery. He's worked formally with various organizations from the NFL to NHL to MLB to MLS, college athletic programs, as well as with individual athletes of all stripes, from Olympic gold medalists to touring dancers to your casual gym-goer.

He is licensed in the state of Tennessee (10161) in 2014, having graduated from the Mind Body Institute, where he currently teaches as an instructor of Ethics and Clinical Concepts.

This course reflects his experience in the field, protocols developed in professional football environments to treat sports injuries, as well as long-established foundational concepts in sports massage.
